During our interview with EZ Trading Computers COO Russ Hazelcorn, we learned about how he wanted to simplify the entire trading process, and present the necessary information to his customers in a way that was never previously available.
What was it that led you to create your own business?
Russ Hazelcorn: One day I did a Google search for “trading computers.” What I saw appalled me. Traders were being gouged on prices. When I tried to buy a trading computer myself, I found the process to be very confusing. I felt like traders were being ripped off. I couldn’t stand for it, so I created my own company to making buying a trading computer easy, hence my company’s name, “EZ” Trading Computers.
Can you describe your business to us in detail?
Russ Hazelcorn: We specialize in educating traders on the technology used for trading, so they can make an intelligent computer purchase. We then provide the final product.
We sell high performance computers direct to traders online. You can’t buy our computers at box store. These aren’t computers for gamers either. Our computers have military grade components, the fastest processor, graphics cards with their own processors, and special cooling systems. We’ve created a methodology for making sure all these components work together so they are ultra-reliable. Most of our customers are individuals trading their own portfolios online. Our customers are power users, compared to those just checking email and surfing the web.
For our customers, all their data has to be streamed in real time and drawn as charts and indicators. If their computer can’t keep up with the incoming stream of data, they will lose money–every millisecond counts. On any given day they are trading on major platforms, like Tradestation, NinjaTrader, MetaTrader, FXCM, ThinkorSwim. They are also streaming news, video, and online meeting platforms simultaneously. Doing all these activities at once would cripple an over-the-counter computer.
Can you tell us about any unexpected obstacles that have crept up during the course of your business?
Russ Hazelcorn: One thing that always surprises me is the number of traders still using old technology. Fifty percent of visitors to my website are still using Windows XP, which I can tell from our web analytics. This is a real risk to traders and most hardware and software isn’t optimized for XP. Traders really put their money at stake when they don’t have the most current tools. Besides, XP came out over 10 years ago in 2001.
Have you ever thought about giving up?
Russ Hazelcorn: No, I never wanted to give up. Even when frustrated, or when sales slowdown, I never want to give up. I love what I do. It’s the challenge of it.
Finally, when it comes to running your own business, what is the most rewarding part?
Russ Hazelcorn: For me, the most rewarding part is getting to talk to traders on a daily basis. I love the challenge of figuring out how to meet their technology needs. Every situation is different. It keeps me on my toes. Also, I love being my own boss; I could never work for anyone.
